NY Funders Alliance Statement on Survival of Nonprofit Organizations During COVID-19
We have joined with representatives of New York’s nonprofit sector, to sign an open letter to New York State with key recommendations for keeping New York’s nonprofits in operation while the State continues to navigate the ongoing pandemic crisis.

Expensify to Offer Support for SNAP Recipients
These are unprecedented times, and it’s inspiring to see communities rising to the challenge. However, not everyone has the resources to “shelter in place” especially the millions of people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Living paycheck to paycheck is hard when millions of businesses around the nation are closing down indefinitely, and hourly workers (including those dependent upon tips) are the hardest hit. In particular, families with kids whose primary meals happen at school are especially vulnerable when those schools shut down.
Liftoff Names Rachel Bonsignore as its First Director
Buffalo, NY (October 23, 2019) – Liftoff, a strategic alliance of 29 funders supporting early childhood initiatives across Western New York and Monroe County has named Rachel Bonsignore as its first director. Liftoff, a collaborative effort launched in 2018, has a mission to promote and enhance high quality early childhood development for children up to age five by integrating practice, policy, research, and resources to ensure they reach their fullest potential.
Capacity Building Group Hires Director
Buffalo, NY (June 21, 2019) – A new working group comprised of five foundations, all NY Funders Alliance members, and two consultants dedicated to supporting area nonprofits has hired Katie Pieri as its first Director. The collaborative group is focused on Western New York and Monroe County and aims to strengthen communities by increasing the capacities of the nonprofit organizations that serve those communities. Pieri will have new office space at the Thomas R. Beecher Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. NY Funders Alliance is the fiscal sponsor for the Director and the working group’s related activities.
The Policy Blog: NYS “Johnson Amendment” Bill
By now, everyone in the philanthropic and charitable sector is familiar with the federal Johnson Amendment and its importance in maintaining nonpartisanship. While a longstanding piece of legislation since the 60’s, there are often efforts made to undermine its integrity. H.R. 949 or the “Free Speech Fairness Act”, for instance, seeks to allow tax-exempt organizations to make statements regarding political campaigns without losing their status. The President has even asserted that he “got rid” of the Johnson Amendment.
