  1. What does it mean for a nonprofit to be data-informed? Many nonprofits are still becoming aware of the power of big data and the skill set of their staff reflects that. However, according to the CEO of Nonprofit Technology Network, that staffing issue is likely to see a dramatic change in the very near future. Read the Full Story Here.
  2. Recently, there has been a rise in philanthropy’s “middlemen” — donor advised funds, venture philanthropy funds and other intermediaries. Is this growth trajectory a good thing? The answer is both yes and no as David Callahan outlines in his article for Inside Philanthropy. Read the Full Story Here.
  3. Contributions to the National Philanthropic Trust increased to $1.7 billion in 2016 (a 72% increase from the year prior). The Trust’s President, Eileen Heisman, attributes the increase in part to favorable market conditions and concern over potential future changes in tax policy. Even though the number of contributions, accounts, and grants increased, the dollar value of those grants actually decreased. One idea as to why is that donors are front-loading contributions, but maintaining their pace of distributing those dollars.  Read the Full Story Here.

As community needs change, nonprofits at every level of the sector are searching for better ways to deliver their services.To achieve their goals, many nonprofits will have to invest in both people and technology, and to do that author Amy Sample Ward asserts they’ll need to fill three key positions: Chief Culture Officer, Data Scientist, and UX Designer. He has recently helped create an immersive experience called “The Institute Presents: Neurosociety” to highlight any of your implicit biases that impact your perspective.
