Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind – 1/11/2019

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1. The 2018 American Institutional Confidence poll from Georgetown University’s Baker Center, conducted by a research team led by political scientists Jonathan M. Ladd of Georgetown and New York University political scientists Joshua A. Tucker and Sean Kates, does warn that “partisanship—far more than age, race, education, social media usage, or other characteristics—explains Americans’ views of our democracy” and “many national institutions are suffused with hyperpartisanship.” The question that concerns nonprofits is the one where people were asked how much confidence they have in various institutions, on a 1-4 point scale. Interestingly, the survey found that with regard to nonprofits and philanthropy, confidence that Republicans and Democrats have is about the same. Read more about why this equal confidence is good for philanthropy here.
  2. A federal rule took effect this month requiring that all hospitals post online the prices of surgery, procedures, and medications. It’s a first step, because it’s gotten us talking about the issue. But what’s really needed is for hospitals (as well as other health care providers, health plans, and state governments, all of which also play an important role) to share meaningful, easy-to-understand measures that are genuinely responsive to consumers’ information needs. 3. Employee compensation represents a significant portion of operating expenses, and, in not-for-profit organizations, there is typically a high degree of scrutiny by regulatory agencies, stakeholders, donors, watchdog organizations, and the press. At the same time, compensation that isn’t competitive with today’s market can severely hinder the ability of an organization to recruit and retain top talent, negatively impacting growth, innovation, and sustainability. This in-depth white paper helps you align your compensation strategy with your organization’s culture and values so that you can attract and retain staff with the skills and experience necessary. It provides insights to ensure that pay practices comply with regulations, and helps you build a compensation plan that motivates and engages your team. Download the white paper here
  4. Health Foundation for Western and Central New York is partnering with Population Health Collaborative on “Live Well WNY,” an initiative focused on making the region healthier.  Learn more about the initiative here
  5. For far too long, the nonprofit sector has thought far too small about the role of marketing and communications. This free webinar series from Independent Sector and Prosper Strategies covers crucial elements about marketing, including why marketing is more critical for nonprofits today than ever before, how today’s most successful nonprofits are increasing the impact of their marketing on their missions by making 10 critical commitments, and how your organization can begin to think bigger about marketing and start its own marketing revolution in 2019
