Friday Rewind – 8/3/2018

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1.  A recent Business of Giving podcast featuring Maya Winkelstein, the executive director of Open Road Alliance, highlights the work of the organization, which partners with at-risk nonprofits to provide fast, flexible capital. Open Road Alliance is seeking to bring conversations about nonprofit risk management into philanthropic discussion, as the risks associated with fund-seeking projects are often not considered proactively, hurting not only nonprofit projects, but communities as well.
  2. This article from Inside Philanthropy analyzes a report from the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation  in NYC discussing shortcomings in the investment advisor community with respect to addressing social justice issues. Impact Investing, although growing in popularity, still has a lot of “gaps in understanding and options.” The list of recommendations for those pursuing impact investing include clearly defining goals and criteria for investing, as well as prioritizing collaboration within the philanthropic sector. 3. The House passed a measure Thursday to block the IRS from using funds revoking the tax-exempt status of churches that participate in political campaigns. The legislation limits the agency from rescinding the groups’ tax-exempt status and requires the express approval of the IRS commissioner to do so. Learn more about how this measure affects the Johnson Amendment here
  4. Your communication skills determine how you are perceived and how successful you are in leading, influencing, and participating in the workplace. Develop as an effective communicator, and you’ll go far in your career. Alternatively, if your habits position you as one of the three characters noted in the linked article, you may be your own worst enemy when it comes to career advancement. Read More Here
  5. Some summer reading suggestions from the Chronicle of Philanthropy cover the topics of Strategic Leadership, measuring outcomes, taking advantage of an increasingly interconnected world, and others! Get the full list here
