Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind – 6/22/2018

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1. Grantcraft shares both a downloadable guide and a podcast covering the benefits, common concerns, and future of knowledge sharing within the field of philanthropy. Titled “Open for Good: Knowledge Sharing to Strengthen Grantmaking,” grantmakers make a strong case for foundations to openly share knowledge as an integral and strategic aspect of philanthropy.
  2. In a recent report released by the New York State Health Foundation, a strong correlation was found between doctors receiving financial incentives from opioid manufacturers, and increased prescriptions for opioids. As more attention is being brought to the opioid crisis both statewide and nationally, factors that affect increased misuse are important to consider. The report is titled “Follow the Money: Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Payments and Opioid Prescribing Patterns in New York State”
  3. Although targeted toward large businesses, this article by the Harvard Business Review detailing several common biases that need to be addressed regarding performance reviews is still highly relevant within the philanthropic sector. Expedience, distance, and similarity biases can impact accurate reviews of individuals within an organization, and the tools to address those biases can be found HERE
  4. The American Enterprise Institute recently released a report titled “Charitable Giving and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” investigating how charitable giving is impacted by recent changes to the tax code. This will impact individual giving, and thus may lead to increased support from foundations being sought out by nonprofits.
  5. For those looking to become more informed or engaged with hotly debated immigration policies, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees is hosting a call to “hear from a panel of experts on the current situation, explore the impact of these policies on families and children, and learn about GCIR’s recommendations on how philanthropy can respond.” Call in on Wednesday, June 27th and learn more here
