2020 Census Funders: Who and Where are New York’s “Hard-to-Count”?
April 27, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The 2020 Census Funders Group is an ad hoc group of Philanthropy New York. It includes regional philanthropic leaders working in partnership with national and local nonprofit, government and business leaders – as well as the NY Funders Alliance and its members. There are over a dozen foundations already associated with this group, but its meetings are open to all who are interested in learning about progress toward a full and fair 2020 Census count.
This gathering will give funders of all programmatic interests an opportunity to hear from experts about the specific geographic and demographic communities across New York State that are officially “hard-to-count.” These are the communities that are most threatened by the possible consequences of an undercount, especially resulting in reduced government funding, poorly-located community services and under-representation in elected office.
Explore:
- Discussion of efforts by the New York Regional Office of the U.S. Census Bureau to prepare for 2020
- Review of geographic maps showing the location of the hardest to count communities across New York State
- Status update on the formation of an official funder collaboration on Census 2020
- Latest updates on what is known about New York State and New York City governments’ dedication of resources to a full and fair count
Discussion Facilitators:
- Maria Mottola, Executive Director, New York Foundation
- Patricia Swan, Senior Program Officer, Community Development & the Environment, The New York Community Trust
- Corinne Ribble, Executive Director, New York Funders Alliance
Guest Speakers:
- Jeff T. Behler, Regional Director, U.S. Census Bureau
- Steven Romalewski, Director, CUNY Mapping Service, Center for Urban Research, The Graduate Center, CUNY
How to Register:
This meeting is taking place in person in New York City at Philanthropy New York’s offices. The last time this group held a meeting, NY Funders Alliance members were invited to participate via teleconference, which provided some challenges for full-participation. This time, we will convene the group via webinar so that everyone can follow along to the slides and ask questions either by phone or type them into the webinar chat function. If you would like to join by webinar, simply email mremaley@philanthropynewyork.org to request webinar registration information. There is no fee for NY Funders Alliance Members
