Friday Rewind – 1/25/2019

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1. Total charitable giving is predicted to increase by 3.4 percent in 2019 and by 4.1 percent in 2020, according to The Philanthropy Outlook 2019 & 2020recently released. The report is researched and written by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI and presented by Marts & Lundy, a leading strategic management consulting firm. Read an analysis of the report, and access it here
  2. The 2018 election results bring change, new opportunities, and different challenges. Join us as we learn about the policy landscape at both the national and state levels. We’ll discuss how potential policy changes could affect children and the varieties of roles funders can play to advance, defend against, or communicate better about policy. This webinar takes place Tuesday, January 29th from 12-1:15 pm EST.
  3. As the government shutdown continues, NY Funders Alliance member The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties held a meeting with local non-profits to discuss the effects of the partial government shutdown and the impact it has on those organizations. John Swann, executive vice president of the foundation, said the first step in helping those in need is listening to those concerns and collaborating on what can be done to help. “The Community Foundation’s role in this instance is leadership in the community, bringing people together initially to share information,” Swann said. “Some of the conversations that we heard may guide next steps for the agencies and the not-for profit themselves and for the community foundation.” Read more about the meeting here
  4. This article co-written by NY Funders Alliance 2018 Annual Meeting presenter Allen Smart discusses the hard truths of dismissing rural philanthropy. It states that “rural communities, even those of just a few hundred people, are often intensely creative and resourceful when it comes to solving their own problems. They have to be. In every case, the biggest contribution by funders wasn’t the money so much as the belief in rural communities and the space and structure in which rural residents can put their heads together to develop new ideas and innovative approaches.” Read More Here
  5. Census 2020 Update: The Department of Justice said it will ask the Supreme Court of the United States to immediately review a proposed 2020 census question which would ask respondents whether or not they are a U.S. citizen, according to a legal filing. The question has already been struck down by a federal judge in New York, read more here
