Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind – 11/30/2018

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1. Financial statements do carry all kinds of warning signals — if you know where to look and how to interpret them. We call them red flags and yellow flags. Red flag indicators mean STOP; ask probing questions, and don’t move forward until you’re satisfied. Yellow flag indicators mean CAUTION; trouble may lie ahead depending on the answers to some well-formulated questions. This report from BoardSource helps define and classify the various flags that may pop up in financial statements.
  2. This episode of Independent Sector’s Civil Renewal podcast series highlights Stacey Stewart, president of March of Dimes. She discusses the ideals and values leaders in civil society should uphold despite – and sometimes because of – the negative and divisive political climate we live in.
  3. This article from Inside Philanthropy “Power in Letting Go: How Participatory Grantmakers Are Democratizing Philanthropy” discusses how participatory grantmaking has been getting more attention in recent years, and a framework has been solidifying around the practice, highlighting results from a recent GrantCraft report together.
  4. To help advocates develop their Complete Count Committee proposals, the Partnership for America’s Children and the Count All Kids Campaign are offering a webinar with Ronald E. Brown, Partnership Coordinator, Philadelphia Region, from the Census Bureau. This webinar will cover what Complete Count Committees do, who can form them, who should be on them, and when they should act. Registration for the webinar is free, and it takes place December 18, 2018.
  5. POWER MOVES, a free toolkit from National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy is your essential philanthropy assessment guide for equity and justice. This toolkit helps determine determine how well you are building, sharing and wielding power and identify ways to transform your programs and operations for lasting, equitable impact. It includes ready-to-use guides, insightful anecdotes and comprehensive resources to help you on your power journey towards high-impact giving. Download here
