Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind – 9/7/2018

The Friday Rewind offers a snapshot of PhilanthroNews —  that means news stories, articles, events of note, or information updates — from around our network and throughout the broad world of philanthropy. Whether you take a quick skim of the material or a deep dive through each item we hope to help inform your work and inspire your thinking.

  1.  Co-Creating Well-Being: Supporting Children and Families Through Trauma is a multi-year, three-phase initiative by NY Funders Alliance member Health Foundation of Western and Central New York (HFWCNY) to see what is possible when we create solutions with children and families impacted by toxic stress and trauma, rather than for them. Learn more about this initiative here
  2. A pilot initiative conducted in California in December 2017 and January 2018 show that unconventional housing is a major source of census undercount. These are the often hidden housing units where many low-income families, primarily minorities and immigrants reside, and are often left off the Census Bureau’s address list. Jacob Model, one of the speakers for the NYS Fall Funders Convening, is utilized as  a resource for this briefing.
  3. The history of the American nonprofit and philanthropic sector is more than just a fascinating story, as detailed in this article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review. As noted, an important difference between charity and philanthropy is that while “charity engages individuals in usually concrete, direct acts of compassion and connection to others, philanthropy has always had both broader goals and implications.” Read more about the evolution of philanthropy here
  4. As funders seek out ways to address the opioid epidemic, more data and resources have become available to provide comprehensive and useful data and information regarding opioid use and misuse. For New York state, one key resource is provided by the Department of Health, and provides summary reports, surveys, and other publications. New resources are added often, so be sure to check back frequently!
  5. As a “throwback” to the 2017 NY Funders Conference, here’s a podcast from one of our plenary speakers, Michael Moody. He discusses the impact that Millennials will have, as both their methods of giving and engagement with donations will alter the face of philanthropy. Listen or read the transcript here
